By our donation of £68,615 in 2020, Ibba
Girls’ Boarding School now will have a new senior dormitory and has
successfully completed its first year of secondary teaching and learning.
The donation to
the girl students over the last five years has enabled them to access vital,
quality education. With our help the school has grown to accommodate 286 girls,
across seven cohorts from Primary 4 to Secondary 2.
Regrettably, the girls’ education has been
rudely interrupted the current global pandemic; like many countries, the South
Sudanese government ordered all schools to close in March. South Sudan has
dealt with other disease outbreaks before, but its healthcare system is
ill-equipped to respond to Covid-19.
As one of the many impacts of our support
for the school is that it has internet access, which enabled the staff to stay
up-to-date and prepared as news of the new virus spread. Part of this
preparation was to provide extra hygiene and sanitation lessons for the
children, and information for their families, before they were sent home from
school. These families will be safer, as the girls put what they have learned
into practice and teach the others in their households.
Some of the staff
have remained to continue construct the site, investment in the school site has
also continued, for example with the construction of a new latrine block,
rainwater harvesting, and the collection of firewood to prepare for when the
school reopens. Girls who are staying in the local area have continued to visit
(observing social distancing) to borrow textbooks and continue their studies.
Girls are also using this time at home to teach their siblings and parents how
to read and write and how to stay safe during the pandemic.
The pandemic will have a significant impact
on the development of students, their family, school and society, but the girls’
longing for knowledge and education will remain unchanged. Science,
development, and all the efforts of construction of school will prevail. As
long as we cherish hopes and dreams, unite in pursuit of a common goal for our students,
we will be able to overcome all our current difficulties and challenges, and
build a better future for all our lovely girls.
